An HVLS (High-Volume, Low-Speed) fan is a large ceiling fan — up to 5.5 metres across — that moves a huge volume of air slowly and efficiently to cool large spaces using very little electricity. Instead of spinning fast like a small fan, it turns gently and pushes a broad, steady column of air across the floor. That is why one HVLS fan can do the work of dozens of small fans while drawing only about 1.5 kW.
How an HVLS fan works
The large diameter is the key. A big, slowly rotating airfoil moves an enormous volume of air in a deep, wide column that spreads out when it reaches the floor and travels along it. Moving air speeds evaporation from the skin, so people feel roughly 3–5°C cooler than the actual temperature — without the air being chilled at all.
A single large HVLS fan covers up to about 1,800 square metres and draws only around 1.5 kW at typical speeds. In cooler months the same fan can run in reverse to push warm air back down from the ceiling, a process called destratification that keeps conditions even year-round.
HVLS fans vs ordinary fans
Small high-speed fans create narrow, gusty drafts and only cool the few people directly in front of them. An HVLS fan delivers a gentle, even breeze across an entire bay, is far quieter at around 50 dB, and consumes a fraction of the power of the many small fans it replaces.
