What is UV-C air purification, and does it work?

Indoor Air Quality·6 min read·Philippine GeoGreen

UV-C air purification uses germicidal ultraviolet light installed inside your HVAC system to inactivate viruses, bacteria and mould as air passes through — sterilising the air your building already circulates. It doesn't cool or filter the air; it disinfects it, working alongside your existing air conditioning and filters.

How in-duct UV-C works

A UV-C system such as Fresh-Aire UV is fitted inside the air handler or ductwork of your existing HVAC. As air circulates, it passes the UV-C lamp, which inactivates a large share of the airborne microorganisms and helps keep the cooling coil free of mould. Because it retrofits into the system you already have, there's no need to replace your HVAC.

What it does — and doesn't — do

UV-C reduces airborne viruses, bacteria and mould as air moves through the system, and some configurations add ionisation or help break down odours and VOCs. It is not a substitute for fresh-air ventilation or particle filtration; it complements them. The strongest results come from combining ventilation, good filters and UV-C together.

Where UV-C helps most

It's especially valuable in healthcare, offices, hospitality and schools — anywhere occupants share recirculated air and wellness matters. Fresh-Aire UV comes in the APCO-X retrofit, the higher-intensity Blue-Tube, custom AHU integration, and an ENHANCE-ION ionisation option, and it supports WELL building standards for air. Frequently asked questions

Yes. In these systems the UV-C lamp is installed inside the ductwork or air handler, so it treats the air out of sight and is not directed at people in the room.
No. UV-C disinfects microbes but does not capture dust and particles, so it works together with — not instead of — your air filters.
In-duct UV-C reduces airborne viruses, bacteria and mould as the air passes the lamp, which lowers the microbial load circulating through the building.
