To cool a warehouse without air-conditioning in the Philippines, combine three low-cost layers: cut roof heat with insulation or a radiant barrier and ridge/exhaust ventilation, move air across the whole floor with large HVLS (high-volume, low-speed) ceiling fans, and reduce internal heat load with daylighting instead of all-day lighting. 1. How do I stop my warehouse roof from heating up?
A hot steel roof radiates heat down onto people and stock, so the cheapest first move is to block and vent that heat: add under-deck insulation or a radiant barrier, and let hot air escape through ridge vents, turbine vents, or powered roof exhaust near the peak. Hot air rises and stagnates under the roof, so pairing a high exhaust point with top-of-wall intake lets the stack effect pull cooler air in low and flush trapped heat out above. A reflective (cool) roof coating cuts the radiant load further before it ever reaches the slab.
2. Do big ceiling fans really cool a warehouse?
Large HVLS ceiling fans don't lower the air temperature, but by pushing a broad, gentle column of air down to the floor they create an evaporative cooling effect on skin that can make workers feel roughly 3–5°C cooler. A large HVLS fan — up to 5.5 metres across — covers as much as 1,800 square metres per unit while drawing only about 1.5 kW, so one correctly sized fan replaces dozens of small high-speed fans and runs on a fraction of the power of air-conditioning. Size to ceiling height and floor plate rather than headline diameter, and if you do run AC in office or QA areas, pair the fans with it so you can raise the set-point. 3. Does daylighting help keep a warehouse cool?
Yes. Two heat sources make a warehouse hotter than it needs to be: the roof, and the lights. Replacing all-day electric lighting with tubular daylighting cuts both the electricity bill and the heat those fixtures add to the space, while modern tubular skylights bring in daylight without the direct solar heat gain of an open roof opening.
